HISTORY OF THE TOWN

Originally, this scenic portion of the Hudson Highlands was settled by the Indians of the Algonquin Tribe, sometimes known as the Delaware or the Leni Lanape.
The first European settlers named the area Buttermilk Falls, after the turbulent brook that fell into the Hudson River. The brook is located just off Main Street at Mountain Avenue.

The village of Highland Falls was founded by separation in 1873 from the larger town of Cornwall, and was incorporated in 1906. The village of Highland Falls is part of the town of Highlands, which includes Fort Montgomery and West Point.

The Thayer Hotel
The historic West Point Hotel, opened in 1926, is named after Sylvanus Thayer, class of 1808, who is the "father of the Military Academy".
It offers commanding views of the Hudson River and the United States Military Academy.
There are wonderful restaurants and a tavern, offering waterfront dining and amazing views.
The Cadet Chapel
Dedicated in 1910 and constructed of native granite, this majestic landmark is a place of Protestant worship for many of the U.S. Corps of Cadets. The architecture combines a Gothic style with the massiveness of a medieval fortress. The Cadet Chapel organ is the largest church organ in the world.
West Point Cemetery
America's oldest military post cemetery is a national historic landmark. Prior to its designation as a military cemetery in 1817, the grounds were used for burials, and the graves of soldiers dating back to the Revolutionary War can be found here. The Old Cadet Chapel was moved here in 1910 from the Cadet Area, piece by piece, to save it for posterity.
West Point Museum &
Visitors Center
A must see while visiting, the newly renovated Museum displays historically significant artifacts from the USMA, the US Army and the Profession of Arms. The DUSA Gift Shop is located here with class gear & household items.
The newly re-opened Visitors Center offers interactive exhibits, helpful information and a wonderful Army West Point gift shop.
Trophy Point
This scenic overlook of the Hudson river is the location of numerous pieces of captured artillery (cannons and mortars) spanning from the Revolutionary War to the Spanish-American War, the Battle Monument, one of the largest columns of granite in the world, and the Great Chain, constructed across the Hudson River from 1778 through 1782 as defenses to prevent British naval vessels from sailing upriver during the American Revolutionary War. A majestic contemporary amphitheater hosts the West Point Band's summer concerts.
Flirtation Walk
A 3/4 mile rock and gravel footpath situated along the Hudson River (from the helipad at North Dock to the edge of Lincoln Hall parking lot), where you will find the 'Kissing Rock'. Tradition states that a cadet must kiss his/her date as they pass underneath the overhanging rock or else it will fall.
The 1934 romantic musical film "Flirtation Walk", about a West Point cadet who falls in love with a General's daughter, is named in honor of this path.
West Point Band - Annual Concerts and Events
Officially established on June 8, 1817, the West Point Band is the oldest continuously serving Army band, and the oldest unit at West Point.
The West Point Band provides world-class music to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets and serves as ambassadors of the United States Military Academy and the Army to local, national, and international communities.
